Joyful Gardening
(click on the word "Joyful" to go to original blog)
I have spent the last few weeks killing grass, digging out roots ( almost to China, I believe!) in preparation to finally plant some of the plants I brought from my home in Florida. Now, I find that I have to till about ten inches deep and then add sand and soil amendments that I have purchased from Iberia Gardens.
Then, and maybe then, I will have adjusted this old blackjack soil enough to plant!
In spite of all of this back-breaking work, I have not lost the thrill and anticiaption of gardening, My lot is devoid of any landscape material and the few trees I did have had to be cut down because they were ten inches from the foundation.
My daylilies seem to be holding their own in the pots that I put them in when I moved. I have no idea which is which so when they bloom in the spring, it will be a huge surprise!
My sugar kettle, just outside my french doors, is in place and the water is hooked up - it's so lovely to hear the sound of bubbling water in the morning.
I also planted some society garlic, and other odds and ends around the sugar kettle.
As a new Louisiana Master Gardener, I learned so much which will help me garden in this clay soil, but best of all, I met wonderful people who share my love of gardening.
I planted two cherry laurel trees that I brought from Florida, and so have no idea if they will grow here, but the birds love them, and they make wonderful small trees, so maybe they will take a liking to my backyard!
Time to return to the root removal process!
Annie
